![]() The flexibility, the lower cost of entry, and the ease of app development make it a great launching pad for an open, all-user-friendly, consumer-need-oriented, responsive environment. Mobile computing is the ideal platform right now for making a real difference. It will also be a critical advantage in the education and federal government sphere, where accessibility is at least theoretically mandated. Making accessibility a requirement, and making the requirement easy to fulfill, is not only going to help the consumers, but will gain app developers and OS providers a loyal customer base. Our recommendation to all of the players in the mobile device market who want to gain a competitive advantage in the mobile arena is that they insist that accessibility design criteria are mandatory for all apps developers. As a consequence, in spite of the efforts of the company, users find themselves with more inaccessible than accessible apps. This creates a manifest contrast between a policy that requires in-house developers to come up with accessible apps and makes an accessible API available to third party developers, but does not enforce that standard. However, none of the companies listed above is willing to make accessibility criteria mandatory for app developers none of them is even willing to create a rating system so that consumers or institutional purchasers can assess accessibility before they buy an app. To protect their brand, some companies even go so far as to require that app developers follow set criteria in order to post apps in an app store. All of these companies put forth lots of effort to educate developers on how to proficiently create apps. To become a leading information technology company in the mobile computing space, Apple, Google, and Microsoft, and even Blackberry, realized that they need developers who can create innovative apps to help increase the adoption rate for their specific platforms. The progress that we witnessed in the mobile computing area is a perfect opportunity for the information technology companies to demonstrate that they value all consumers, including people with disabilities. Though Apple has been leading in this arena, other operating systems’ providers like Microsoft and Google have recently been more proactive about designing accessible mobile operating systems (OS) and mobile devices. Expensive add-on software or specialized hardware is no longer a requirement for a person with disabilities. Though not gone altogether, the financial burden on people with disabilities of obtaining separate accessible products has certainly decreased over time. Anne Taylor, in Ensuring Digital Accessibility Through Process and Policy, 2015 Mobile ComputingĪs mentioned in previous chapters, out-of-the-box accessibility features on mainstream mobile devices have changed the world for consumers with disabilities.
